In her questioning of Marie Yovanovitch, the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, Rep. Terri Sewell, D-Ala., asked the career diplomat what it felt like to have her "reputation sullied" and the personal toll her ouster has taken. "I'm a private person. I don't want to put all that out there, but it has been a very, very difficult time," she said. Yovanovitch further explained that the president has the right to have their own ambassador, but she was unclear why the smear campaign against her took place. "All the president has to do is say he wants a different ambassador," she said. "And in my line of work ... all we have is our reputation. So this has been a very painful period." The impeachment probe into President Donald Trump centers around a July phone call in which Trump asked the president of Ukraine to investigate former vice president and 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. Yovanovitch has testified that she was forced out of her position after Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, engineered a smear campaign against her.
