Rep. Val Demings, D-Fla., questioned Marie Yovanovitch, the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, in a public hearing as part of the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump. Demings asked if Yovanovitch shared a concern raised by another ambassador in testimony about political influence in foreign policy. "I think it's important to keep political influence out of foreign policy because we all, whether we are Republican, Democrat or something else, have common security interests," she said. The impeachment probe centers around a July phone call in which Trump asked the president of Ukraine to investigate former vice president and 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. Yovanovitch has testified that she was forced out of her position after Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, engineered a smear campaign against her. Yovanovitch said that the lack of support from senior officials amid the smear campaign was "deeply troubling" and that there are morale issues at the State Department.
