Rep. Adam Schiff, the chair of the House Intelligence Committee, questioned Fiona Hill, the White House’s former Russia adviser, on Nov. 21, in a public hearing as part of the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump. Schiff asked Hill about her concern about the "Russian narrative" she mentioned in her opening statement, which pushes the disputed notion that Ukraine -- and not Russia -- interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The chair asked why it's in Russia's interest to push that narrative about Ukraine. It is in "the Russians' interests, frankly, to delegitimize our entire presidency," Hill said. "The goal of the Russians was really to put whoever became the president, by trying to tip their hands on one side of the scale, under a cloud." Hill added: "What we are seeing here as a result of all of these narratives, this is exactly what the Russian government was hoping for." The impeachment inquiry has focused on a July 25 phone call in which Trump asked the president of Ukraine to investigate former vice president and 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.
