Michael Purpura, deputy White House counsel, argued on Jan. 27 that there was no link between U.S. military aid to Ukraine in exchange for investigations into Trump’s political rivals, including the Bidens. Purpura argued that Trump’s concerns about corruption in Ukraine, which the White House has said was a key reason for withholding the aid, were documented as far back as mid-2017. Purpura’s argument came after The New York Times reported John Bolton, in an upcoming book, says Trump told him he wanted to withhold the aid until Ukraine agreed to the investigations. Trump’s defense team is presenting their arguments as part of the Senate impeachment trial. The trial has entered a pivotal week as his defense team resumes its case and senators face a critical vote on whether to hear witnesses or proceed directly to a vote that is widely expected to end in his acquittal. The articles of impeachment charge Trump with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The House of Representatives impeached the president in December on those two counts.
