Sen. Doug Jones, D-Ala., decried what he considers a lack of politicians’ willingness to stand up to their party and risk losing reelection for the good of the nation. “I fear that moral courage, country before party, is a rare commodity these days,” Jones said during a Feb. 5 speech on the Senate floor in which he explained why he would vote later that day to convict Trump of two articles of impeachment. Jones is seen as one of the most vulnerable Democrats' in the 2020 election. After the Senate voted last week to bar new witness testimony and subpoenas for documents, Trump’s acquittal has seemed all but assured. The House of Representatives impeached Trump in December on two articles of impeachment — abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
