She said she was able to live the promise of America thanks to the sacrifices of those who came before her, whose stories symbolize both “beauty” and "pain.” Obama continued that “who we choose as our president in this election will determine whether or not we honor that struggle and chip away at that injustice and keep alive the very possibility of finishing that work.” Obama was the keynote speaker for the first night of the 2020 Democratic National Convention. The coronavirus pandemic upended both parties’ traditional conventions. Instead, the program each night features a number of speakers and musical performances virtually across the country.
