as posted by the channelDuring the final presidential debate between President Donald Trump and Vice President Joe Biden on Oct. 22, Trump said that he loves “the environment” and falsely claimed that the United States has “the best, lowest number in carbon emissions.”
Although those emissions have fluctuated over time, with some years being better than others, the U.S. remains the second largest emitter of greenhouse gases after China. The Trump administration has also made a sweeping effort to roll back climate protection regulations implemented during former President Barack Obama's years in office.
Trump also defended his decision to remove the U.S. from the 2015 Paris climate agreement, which he characterized as “unfair” and claimed it would have “destroyed” American businesses. The agreement was designed according to each involved nation’s individual wealth and development status in addition to its specific role in contributing to total global emissions.
As one of the world’s wealthiest nations and a top emitter, the U.S. played a key role in terms of its pledged financial contribution to the agreement and to reducing its own emissions before Trump pulled the nation out.
