President Donald Trump is not in attendance at his successor’s ceremony, breaking a longstanding tradition. Exactly two weeks ago, a violent pro-Trump mob stormed the building where Biden will be sworn in, motivated by the outgoing president’s false claim that he lost the election due to widespread voter fraud. Some of the rioters reportedly chanted death threats toward Pence during the Capitol attack. While Trump never formally conceded to Biden, Pence called his successor, Kamala Harris, to offer his congratulations and assistance in the transition five days ago.
