David Cicilline, D-R.I., spoke Feb. 10 as House Democrats made their case for why the Senate should convict former President Donald Trump on a charge of inciting insurrection during the attack on the U.S. Capitol. Trump was impeached by the House in January, while he was still in office.
Cicilline argued that even while deadly violence broke out in the U.S. Capitol, Trump remained singularly focused on one thing: stopping the certification of Joe Biden’s victory. Cicilline noted that shortly after 2 p.m., around the time that the Capitol was breached, Trump and his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani both attempted to reach a GOP senator to ask him to slow down the process.
Cicilline said these calls were “as clear evidence as I’ve ever seen of what Donald Trump really cared about that day.” “Donald Trump abdicated his duty to us all,” he concluded. “We have to make this right. And you can make it right.
