Tim Scott, R-S.C., praised Georgia’s new voting law on Wednesday and pushed back on criticism from Democrats who argue that this legislation and other new state bills will suppress voting, particularly for people of color. Scott, who is Black, said he takes “voting rights personally,” and that Republicans are focused on “making it easier to vote and harder to cheat.” He called the sweeping voting rights bill passed by the House of Representatives in March a “Washington power grab,” and said that conversation surrounding the issue had collapsed. “This is not about civil rights or our racial past,” Scott said. “It’s about rigging elections in the future.” Scott offered a response to President Joe Biden’s joint address to Congress on April 28, 2021. Normally the full House and Senate and most of the president’s Cabinet would be in attendance, but because of COVID-19 restrictions, attendance was limited to roughly 200 people.
