Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, said in opening remarks March 21 for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson's Supreme Court confirmation hearings that " we must protect the court." "We lose ability to protect the court if we allow arguments to take root that are focused on .... turning the court into a political body,” Lee said.

In part, Lee used his opening statement to vehemently argue against political efforts to expand the Supreme Court to more than nine justices, though he acknowledged there’s nothing in the Constitution requiring a certain number of justices.

Jackson was nominated by President Joe Biden in February to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. If confirmed, she will be the first Black woman on the high court.
