0:32Now PlayingPope Emeritus Benedict XVI’s body lay in state in St. Peter’s Basilica on Monday in Vatican City, where tens of thousands of people lined up to pay their respects.
The Vatican said that around 65,000 people came to the first day of the viewing. Benedict, who was the first pontiff to resign in 600 years, died on Dec. 31, 2022, after his health deteriorated over the Christmas weekend, according to a Vatican spokesperson.
Filippo Tuccio — a 35-year-old from Venice — traveled by overnight train to pay his respects to a man he said had a key role in his life and education.
“He was very important for me: for what I am, my way of thinking, my values,” Tuccio said.
