2:09Now PlayingAttorney General Merrick Garland pushed back against claims from IRS whistleblowers that the Justice Department interfered with an investigation into Hunter Biden’s taxes and foreign business dealings.
The Republican-led House Ways and Means Committee publicly released congressional testimony from two former IRS agents, who claimed, among other allegations, that Garland rejected a request from U.S. Attorney David Weiss of Delaware to be appointed special counsel on the investigation.
Garland said Weiss never made that request with him, adding that Weiss — who was first appointed U.S. attorney by former President Donald Trump — has the authority to pursue his investigation into President Joe Biden’s son any way and anywhere he wants.
“I don’t know how it would be possible for anybody to block him for bringing a prosecution given that he has that authority,” Garland told reporters on June 23. “He was given complete authority to make all decisions on his own.”
In a June 7 letter to the House Judiciary Committee, Weiss wrote he was granted "ultimate authority over this matter, including responsibility for deciding where, when, and whether to file charges."
