WATCH: Zelenskyy says Ukraine-U.S. 'partnership is stronger than any Russian hostility'

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in Washington that his nation stands firm in the face of Russia’s ongoing invasion of his country.

During a joint news conference with President Joe Biden on Tuesday, Zelenskyy made his case for further U.S. financial support as congressional Republicans seek to hold out on legislation in order to push for stricter border policies.

Zelenskyy said Ukraine’s sacrifice, and the support of the international community, ensures the safety of other European countries close to Russia’s border. He said this support means Ukraine can directly confront Putin “so our children and other nations won’t have to shed their blood and sacrifice lives defending against Russian aggression.”

Zelenskyy is visiting Washington as he seeks additional support for his country’s efforts to fend off the ongoing Russian invasion. Earlier in the day, he met with both Republican and Democratic congressional leaders.

Biden has asked lawmakers to approve an additional $110 billion U.S. aid package for Ukraine, Israel and other national security priorities. But his plan is at serious risk of collapse in Congress, as Republicans are insisting on linking it to strict U.S.-Mexico border security changes that Democrats don’t support.

Out of the new $110 billion national security package, $61.4 billion would go toward Ukraine, with about half of that sum going to weapons and the remainder for humanitarian assistance.
