Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., paid tribute to longtime Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas, who died of cancer at age 74 in Houston on Friday.
Before delivering opening remarks at a congressional hearing about the investigation into the July 13 attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, Nadler praised the Texas congresswoman’s dedication to civil rights and progressive causes, noting how she was engaged in many spirited debates with her colleagues, even with those she vehemently disagreed with.
“She deeply loved the institution of Congress,” Nadler said, especially the Judiciary Committee, which provided Jackson Lee a platform to make a meaningful impact on the lives of millions of Americans.
“When Sheila took up a cause, she could be relentless in her determination to see it through,” Nadler said. That often meant making one extra phone call, going to one more meeting, offering one more amendment or making one more speech.
“She would not rest until she thought she’d done everything she could to fight for the issues she cared about,” he added.
