1:15Now PlayingFBI deputy director Paul Abbate spoke in a hearing Tuesday with Secret Service acting director Ronald Rowe on the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump.
Abbate said the FBI has discovered over 700 social media comments they believe were made by the shooter around 2019 and 2020 that he described as antisemitic and anti-immigrant.
“Some of these comments, if ultimately attributable to the shooter, appear to reflect antisemitic and anti-immigration themes to espouse political violence and are described as extreme in nature,” Abbate said. “While the investigative team is still working to verify this account to determine if it did in fact belong to the shooter, we believe it important to share it today."
The joint hearing of the Senate Homeland Security and Senate Judiciary Committee was the latest to examine what investigators have learned about the shooter who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania campaign rally, as well as the security failures that preceded the deadly shooting.
Rowe, who since 2023 had been serving as deputy director of the Secret Service, was appointed acting director after Kimberly Cheatle’s resignation.
