2:11Now PlayingSgt. Aquilino Gonell, a former Capitol Hill police officer, spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Wednesday, a night focused on fighting “for our freedoms,” from democracy to reproductive rights and more.
Gonell was serving at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, when insurrectionists stormed the building and disrupted the official proceedings certifying President Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 election.
“We were beaten and blinded. I was assaulted with a pole attached to the American flag. [Former President Donald] Trump summoned our attackers... . He betrayed us,” Gonell said.
“When I joined the Army and Capitol Police, I took an oath to defend the Constitution. I did so with duty in my soul, and I still feel it. To Donald Trump, I ask: Why don’t you?”
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz will also formally accept the vice presidential nomination, a day before Vice President Kamala Harris takes the stage as the official nominee.
