3:01Now PlayingIn response to being asked to validate his own claims that he was in Hong Kong during the spring 1989 Tiananmen Square protests after several news outlets have said he was not in Hong Kong until August 1989, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz answered that he traveled to China in the summer of 1989 as a young teacher.
He then talked at length about his commitment to his community and the people of Minnesota before returning to discuss his trips to China as a teacher.
“I learned a lot about China. I hear the critiques of this. I would make the case that Donald Trump should have come on one of those trips with us. I guarantee you he wouldn't be, uh, praising Xi Jinping about COVID, and I guarantee you, he wouldn’t start a trade war that he ends up losing,” Walz said.
One of the moderators, Margaret Brennan, then pushed Walz to more directly answer the question.
“All I said on this was, I got there that summer and misspoke on this, so that's what I've said So I was in Hong Kong and China during the democracy protests, went in. And from that I learned a lot of what needed to be in governance,” Walz said.
With just more than a month to go before Election Day, Ohio Sen. Vance and Walz met for their first and only vice presidential debate on Oct. 1, hosted by CBS in New York.
