“The ultimate reason why I got into wine is because you really don't see Black women in this space,” she told PBS News’ Gabrielle Hays.
Out of about 11,600 wineries in the U.S., fewer than 1 percent are Black-owned, according to the Association of African American Vintners.
Now a sommelier and self-described “cool somm,” Gilliam-Sandford has sought to make the culture of wine more accessible to her community in St. Louis.
She shares three tips on how to taste wine, including why that first sip is not necessarily representative of a glass of wine.
