When Esther Keim was growing up in the Alaskan wilderness, a family friend delivered her Thanksgiving turkey by plane.

By late November, only 20% of rural Alaska is accessible by road, making it difficult to get to the grocery store for holiday staples or other goods. As an adult, Keim lives in a more urban area, but those special deliveries never left her mind.

She launched Alaska Turkey Bomb a few years ago with the help of her dad to give other people the joy of a holiday bird. This year, she plans to drop 32 turkeys, coordinating many deliveries with the help of social media and others by word of mouth.

It's a tradition she hopes can grow. She wants to launch a nonprofit to solicit more donations — with luck, a few presents — and to reach more of the state, too.

“There’s so many kids out in the villages," she told the AP. “It would be cool to maybe add a stuffed animal or something they can hold.”
