Syria's President Bashar Assad fled to Moscow, where he was granted asylum, Russian state media reported.
Ahmad al-Sharaa, who went by the nickname he adopted, Abu Mohammed al-Golani, is the leader of the insurgency, and has called Assad's fall the birth of a new nation. Al-Sharaa, who was formerly linked to al-Qaida, now leads the rebel group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham or HTS. They say they now seek to build a functioning government.
