WATCH: 'Far-sighted' Carter put presidency on the line for the future, Mondale wrote in eulogy

Jimmy Carter’s leadership as president was "far-sighted" and put aside short-term political gain on issues like climate change and human rights, according to remarks prepared by his vice president, Walter Mondale, and read at his funeral by Ted Mondale on Thursday.

“Carter was far-sighted. He put aside his short-term political interests to tackle challenges that demanded sacrifice, to protect our kids and grandkids from future harm,” Ted Mondale said, reading from his father's tribute.

“Very few people in the 1970s had heard the term ‘climate change.’ Yet Carter put his presidency on the line to pass laws to conserve energy, deregulate new oil and gas prices and invest in clean renewable alternatives to fossil fuels,” Mondale continued.

Mondale wrote that this action paved the way for future presidents to deal with climate change despite skepticism from his contemporaries.

“Some thought he was crazy to fight so hard to pass these laws. But he was dead right,” Ted Mondale read.

Ted Mondale said Carter also “elevated” human rights on the agenda of presidents, in particular the rights of women. He noted that Carter appointed women to critical positions in the executive branch and nominated five times the number of women to the federal judiciary as all his predecessors combined.

Walter Mondale had prepared the eulogy to be read at Carter’s funeral before his own death in 2021.

In attendance at the funeral were Carter family members, world leaders and the five living U.S. presidents -- Donald Trump, Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

The official state funeral in Washington on Thursday caps a long farewell that began — and will end — in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. Carter died Dec. 29 at age 100.
