1:48Now PlayingDefense Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth said that the U.S.’s "utter failure" in the withdrawal from Afghanistan led to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the Hamas Oct. 7 attack in Israel.
“The world recognized weakness for what it was,” Hegseth said.
He accused the Biden administration of a lack of planning and accountability around the Afghanistan withdrawal, which "they still touted as the most successful airlift in American history," he said. "When what the rest of us all saw was true laid before our eyes. Utter failure.
A destruction of a military legacy there. Abandonment of our allies, death of American troops. Detriment to our reputation. And then no answers and no accountability on the other side."
Hegseth is a military veteran and conservative media personality. President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for defense secretary has faced allegations of sexual misconduct and excessive drinking, and been criticized as a nominee for his controversial views on diversity and religion in the military.
