2:42Now PlayingDoug Burgum, nominee for secretary of the interior, said Thursday at his confirmation hearing held by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee that he supports multiple uses for federal lands, including grazing rides, timber and logging, oil and gas production or recreational use.
“This land was put away for the benefit, use and the enjoyment of the American people. Not every acre of federal land is a national park or a wilderness area. Some of those areas we have to absolutely protect for their precious stuff, but the rest of it, this is America's balance sheet,” Burgum said.
The country’s minerals and land -- surface, subsurface and offshore -- are its assets, Burgum said. “If we were a company, they would look at us and say, 'Wow, you are really restricting your balance sheet.'”
Burgum is a former corporate executive and governor of North Dakota who championed oil and gas drilling. President-elect Donald Trump has also tapped him to lead the new National Energy Council.
