Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., questioned Doug Burgum, nominee for secretary of the interior, in a confirmation hearing Thursday held by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

Heinrich asked if Burgum would collaborate with a bipartisan group of senators on their Recovering America’s Wildlife Act to prevent species from becoming endangered. Burgum said that was “a super sound” approach.

Heinrich and Burgum also discussed tribal water settlements, which secure tribal water rights, as well as wind power.

Burgum is a former corporate executive and governor of North Dakota who championed oil and gas drilling. President-elect Donald Trump has also tapped him to lead the new National Energy Council.
