Va, the new chair of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, with a gavel made from the wood of West Virginia statehouse ahead of the hearing for Lee Zeldin, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for director of the Environmental Protection Agency.
“First I'd like to let everyone know that I like the chairman,” Whitehouse said. “That's a good start and in that context, I would like to present her as the new chairman with this gavel.”
Whitehouse then explained the gavel’s history and that it belonged to former West Virginia Gov. Hulett Smith who preceded Moore Capito’s father as governor of West Virginia.
“Madam chair, may you bang it in good health,” Whitehouse said.
Zeldin is a former congressman from New York. He left Congress in January 2023 and was among the Republicans in the House of Representatives who voted against certifying the 2020 election results. In his time in the House, he did not serve on committees that oversaw environmental policy.
