Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-N.H., asked homeland security secretary nominee Kristi Noem to commit to increasing personnel and resources at the northern border in her confirmation hearing Friday held by the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.

Noem, the Republican governor of South Dakota, agreed with Hassan that the northern border is under-resourced and needs improved technology.

“We do have to have the resources in order to be successful. That's something I want to work with Congress, with the Senate and the House, on to ensure that the resources are there to meet the challenges that we have,” Noem said. “We have not fully utilized the technologies that are available that are necessary to really secure this country.”

Noem is a rancher and a former member of Congress. A close ally to Trump, Noem has called migration across the U.S. southern border “an invasion.” If confirmed, Noem would play a key role in carrying out his promised immigration crackdown by leading the Department of Homeland Security, one of the largest federal agencies.
