Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., questioned Doug Collins in his confirmation hearing for veterans affairs secretary before the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs on Tuesday.

The senator asked Collins how he’d best support veterans in their transitions to civilian life.

In his remarks, the senator said that it is a time when often people sense a loss of belonging and purpose, and when suicidal ideation is more prevalent.

Moran asked how much value Collins places on the caregiving process to support veterans at this crucial moment.

Collins, who said in the hearing that suicide prevention would be one of the agency’s major priorities, said he’d leverage available resources, not just those at the VA and Department of Defense, to help veterans.

“I’m willing to look at any way we can make the connection to make those transitions as easy as possible,” he said.

Collins is a colonel and chaplain in the U.S. Air Force Reserve Command who was stationed in Iraq in 2008. The former lawmaker, who is also a lawyer, was one of President Donald Trump’s defenders in his first impeachment case during his first term. During his time in Congress, Collins did not serve on the House Veterans Affairs Committee.
