WATCH: Stefanik says she supports giving Trump ‘maximum flexibility’ in ending Ukraine war

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., questioned Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., in her confirmation hearing Tuesday about how, as U.S. ambassador to the U.N., she might “address and punish Russia's ongoing attempted genocide in Ukraine.”

“I support President Trump's commitment to bringing this war to a resolution to stop the killing,” Stefanik said.

As a candidate, Trump said he could end the war in Ukraine on the first day of his new presidency, and that he would help the two sides negotiate a “fair deal.” Under the Biden administration, the U.S. provided more than $65 billion in military assistance to Ukraine.

When Shaheen asked Stefanik whether there were specific things that the United States could do at the United Nations to hold Russia accountable, the nominee responded that “it's going to be important to support President Trump's approach with his special envoy to address and bring that to a resolution,” and that she would work with other members of the Trump administration to “give him maximum flexibility to bring this to a resolution.”

Stefanik appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday. A loyal ally to Trump, she is chair of the House Republican Conference, and was the youngest woman ever elected to Congress when she won her seat in 2014. While she has little foreign policy experience, Stefanik has been vocal about Israel and its war with Hamas. She has called for a “complete reassessment” of the U.S.’s funding for the U.N.
