Howard Lutnick, a billionaire businessman and co-chair of President Donald Trump’s transition team, said during his confirmation hearing to become commerce secretary that he wanted to be a take a "thoughtful and rigorous approach" to leading the department.
Lutnick, CEO of the investment bank Cantor Fitzgerald and a cryptocurrency advocate, appeared Wednesday before the Senate Committee of Commerce, Science and Transportation.
In his opening statement, Trump’s nominee talked about Cantor Fitzgerald, the firm he helped rebuild after it lost hundreds of employees, including his brother, in the Sept. 11 attack at the World Trade Center.
He described himself as an outcome-driven leader who was inspired by Trump's campaign to serve.
"We need healthy businesses — small, medium and large — to hire our great American workers to drive our economy," Lutnick said, adding that he hoped to make the department more responsive to opportunities for American workers.
The Commerce Department includes the U.S. Census Bureau, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the nation’s Patent and Trademark Office. The secretary also plays a leading role in implementing U.S. artificial intelligence policy.
