2:28Now PlayingKash Patel, Trump's nominee for FBI director, challenged characterizations during his Thursday confirmation hearing that he was anti-law enforcement.
During the hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee., Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., raised a previous X post from Patel that read, "Jan. 6 never an insurrection: cowards in uniform exposed."
Given an opportunity later to respond, Patel pointed to his 16 years in government service.
"I have repeatedly, often publicly and privately said: There can never be a tolerance for violence against law enforcement and anyone, anyone that commits an act of violence against law enforcement must be investigated, prosecuted," Patel said.
A loyal Trump supporter, Patel is a former public defender turned Justice Department prosecutor. He served in Trump’s first term as chief of staff to acting defense secretary Christopher Miller. In interviews, he has said he wants to reduce the size of the national intelligence community, and shut down the FBI’s headquarters in Washington. He’s also repeated the false narrative that Trump won the 2020 election.
