1:24Now PlayingSen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., questioned Linda McMahon on Thursday about handling sexual assault cases on college campuses in her confirmation hearing for education secretary.
Baldwin raised a lawsuit against McMahon and her husband alleging that, when they led World Wrestling Entertainment, they fostered a system that allowed an employee to sexually abuse children in the 1980s. The suit accuses them of failing “to prevent the abuse by taking even the most reasonable measures” to protect children.
“I am so concerned about whether sexual assault survivors on campus can trust you to support them,” Baldwin said.
“You have my absolute commitment that I will uphold and protect those investigations to make sure that those students are treated fairly on both sides,” McMahon responded.
McMahon appeared before the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.
She is a former pro-wrestling executive who led the Small Business Administration during President DonaldTrump’s first term. She has little background in education policy, serving about a year on the Connecticut State Board of Education.
The Trump administration, along with efficiency czar Elon Musk, is already moving forward with plans to dismantle the Department of Education, which McMahon would lead if confirmed.
