Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, asked Linda McMahon during her confirmation hearing for education secretary on Thursday about how she’ll balance local control over school curriculums with her previous statements about withholding grant money from schools that don’t adhere to executive orders.
McMahon did not directly answer the question, but instead repeated Murkowski’s concern for local control.
“I believe, as does the president, the best education is closest to the child,” McMahon said. “The parents and school officials who understand the needs of those children in those communities can best direct the education of those states and states will be competitive.”
McMahon, who appeared before the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, is a former pro-wrestling executive who led the Small Business Administration during President Donald Trump’s first term. She has little background in education policy, serving about a year on the Connecticut State Board of Education.
The Trump administration, along with efficiency czar Musk, is already moving forward with plans to dismantle the Department of Education, which McMahon would lead if confirmed.
