Sen. Jon Husted, R-Ohio, questioned Lori Chavez-DeRemer on Wednesday about the effects of illegal immigration on U.S. wages in her confirmation hearing for labor secretary.

“I'm just interested in your opinion about whether or not you think the influx of millions of people into this country who, many of them are here illegally, it's undermining the earning power of the American worker?” Husted said.

“The mass immigration that we've seen over the last four years has hurt the American worker, and we want to make sure that we're supporting President Trump in his endeavor to support the American worker at all cost,” the nominee said.

Whether and how immigrant labor affects the wages of Americans has long been the subject of scholarly debate. Despite the rhetoric espoused by President Donald Trump, who has said inaccurately that immigrants take away jobs from Black and Hispanic people, studies have found that immigrants help drive up local wages.

Chavez-DeRemer appeared before the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.

The former mayor and Oregon congresswoman was raised in a Teamsters family and has strong backing from labor groups. Her union-friendly stance has been a point of contention among her fellow Republicans.
