as posted by the channelDirector of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said Wednesday that a senior national intelligence official "has taken full responsibility" for inadvertently including a journalist in a Signal app group chat in which senior Trump administration officials discussed sensitive U.S. military attack plans.
Gabbard said during her opening statement in a hearing before the House Intelligence Committee that "it was a mistake" that the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, Jeffrey Goldberg, was added to the group chat, which was created to discuss an American attack on Houthi rebels in Yemen. She said that National Security Advisor Mike Waltz has taken responsibility.
"The National Security Council is conducting an in-depth review, along with technical experts working to determine how this reporter was inadvertently added to this chat," Gabbard said. She also said "no classified information was shared" in the chat, echoing what other Trump administration officials have said since news of the group chat was reported Monday. And she defended the use of the encrypted app, Signal, saying the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency recommended Signal as an app designed to protect communications.
In the time since the group chat was reported, national security experts and lawmakers have expressed concern about the major lapse in security.
The text chain also included Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and CIA Director John Ratcliffe, who testified alongside Gabbard on Wednesday. It was the second time the intelligence officials appeared to offer congressional testimony this week. On Tuesday, Ratcliffe and Gabbard were pressed about the group chat during a hearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee . They were joined by FBI Director Kash Patel, NSA Director Timothy Haugh and Defense Intelligence Agency Director Jeffrey Kruse.
