as posted by the channelRep. Suzan DelBene, D-Wash., questioned U.S. trade representative Jamieson Greer about President Donald Trump's tariff policy during a House committee hearing Wednesday.
DelBene asked Greer, "How can any country trust the U.S. enough to make a trade deal?... How are people going to trust us when, arbitrarily, these deals are being thrown out?"
Greer responded that countries are already working to negotiate better trade deals. "The countries are coming. If they were hesitant, they wouldn't be knocking on our door," he said.
"But I don't understand what the countries are coming to do," DelBene replied.
"You put tariffs in place, sweeping tariffs with no specifics in terms of what the goals are, no plans, and then you say 'countries are coming' to what? To individually negotiate with President Trump and it's his whim what's acceptable or not acceptable?"
Greer testified before the House Ways and Means Committee Wednesday, a day after appearing at the Senate Finance Committee. His testimony came as President Donald Trump announced he would pause global tariffs imposed on many countries that had just gone into effect at midnight. Trump also announced he would raise tariffs on Chinese imported goods to 125%.
