as posted by the channelA symbol of change and hope for the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina to Italian parents, died early Monday at the age of 88.
Francis was the first Jesuit pope, the first Latin American pope and the first pope from outside Europe in at least 1,000 years.
He was elected pontiff in March of 2013 at the age of 76 following his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI's surprise resignation. During his papacy, Francis became known for his pastoral approach to the job and for shedding some of the trappings a pope receives upon his election. For instance, he chose to live in the Vatican guesthouse, rather than the regal papal apartment.
The late pope also made headlines with his comments on climate change, homosexuality and contraception.
Francis had suffered from chronic lung disease and was hospitalized on Feb. 14, 2025 and stayed there for nearly 40 days.
