as posted by the channelRep. Tom Cole, R- Okla., questioned Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy Wednesday on how the FAA is working to address the national air traffic controller shortage.
Duffy responded that it’s complicated to get students into and through, the FAA Academy and that the department is working to restructure classes and increase academic support to enroll and graduate more students. He also said DOT is offering upfront bonuses to retirement-eligible air traffic controllers who continue working.
“You got to pay people to stick around, and we're in an emergency situation,” Duffy said.
Duffy's appearance before the House Committee on Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development comes as key administration officials present their budget requests. Duffy's requests come as significant outages have impacted flights at Newark Liberty International Airport.
