1:42Now PlayingPresident Donald Trump called Elon Musk "one of the greatest business leaders and innovators the world has ever produced" at a news conference Friday with the billionaire. Musk announced that he was leaving his role as White House advisor earlier in the week.
"I just want to say that Elon has worked tirelessly helping lead the most sweeping and consequential government reform program in generations," Trump said. "Elon delivered a colossal change in the old ways of doing business in Washington."
Musk led the Department of Government Efficiency, also known as DOGE, a Trump initiative aimed at slashing federal spending. As a special government employee, he could only work for an allotted number of days.
During his turbulent tenure, Musk initiated thousands firings and major spending cuts at various federal agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Education, and dismantled the United States Agency for International Development. Among the many lawsuits that have been filed, a judge ruled Tuesday that states can move forward with a case alleging that Musk and DOGE have illegally wielded power.
