2:42Now PlayingDemocratic governors told a House committee on Wednesday that President Donald Trump’s militarized response to Los Angeles protests undermined state officials.
The governors were called before House Oversight Committee to discuss "sanctuary state" policies, or laws that limit the scope of local law enforcement’s cooperation with federal immigration operations.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker said local law enforcement are the ones who signal to the governor or other local officials about possibly needing support from the National Guard.
“When the president of the United States is calling out your National Guard, over the top of local law enforcement, saying that they don't need it, that they have things under control, it tends to have an inflaming effect on what's going on on the ground just when local law enforcement officials are getting things under control,” he said. “And I think that's what we saw in Los Angeles.”
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said “as a governor, not being notified as local law enforcement, it creates a chaotic situation that they cannot operate as a joint unit.”
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said the president’s actions “absolutely undermine the sovereignty of individual states,” adding that state governors are the commanders-in-chief of the National Guard.
She also said the Trump’s actions undermine the confidence placed in local law enforcement.
“I have more confidence in our law enforcement, then perhaps the president does, and we ought to step back and say, ‘This is an overreach of epic proportions,'" Hochul said.
