WATCH: Trump actions in Los Angeles are warning and ‘wake-up call’ for U.S, Padilla says

President Donald Trump’s use of the National Guard and Marines during anti-deportation protests in Los Angeles last week are a “warning shot” and “wake-up call” for the rest of the United States, Sen. Alex Padilla said in a Senate floor speech Tuesday.

“What's happening is not just a threat to California. It's a threat to everyone in every state,” Padilla said.

The California senator said Trump had deployed the National Guard and Marines to “put down” protests “without justification.” He said that by deporting alleged illegal immigrants without a hearing, the Trump administration was ignoring due process and could do the same for citizens.

“California is just a test case for the rest of the country. Last week, for many it was a warning shot. But I pray that it also serves as a wake-up call.”

Padilla was physically removed and handcuffed from a news conference held by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in Los Angeles.

“It doesn't matter if you're a Republican or a Democrat or an independent. We all have a responsibility to speak up and to push back before it's too late. So I do encourage people to keep peacefully protesting. There's nothing more patriotic than to peacefully protest for your rights,” he said.

“If this administration is this afraid of just one senator with a question, colleagues, imagine what the voices of tens of millions of Americans peacefully protesting can do,” Padilla added.
