The U.S, in the middle of World War II, dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. Three days later, the U.S. dropped a second atomic bomb on another Japanese city — Nagasaki. Japan, an Axis power, surrendered soon after, ending the war.
First-hand accounts of the bombing of Hiroshima, and its aftermath, emerged a year later. Journalist John Hersey brought the lasting damage to light.
In 2020, PBS News' Jeffrey Brown spoke with Lesley M.M. Blume about "Fallout," her book on Hersey and his influential writing about the bombing of Hiroshima.
