2:36Now PlayingPresident Donald Trump declared during a news conference Saturday that the United States is "going to run" Venezuela after the U.S. carried out an early morning military operation in Caracas, capturing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and flying them out of the country.
"We can't take a chance that somebody else takes over Venezuela that doesn't have the good of the Venezuelan people in mind," Trump said. "We're going to stay until such time as — we're going to run it essentially — until such time as a proper transition can take place."
The president also said the U.S. is prepared to stage "a second and much larger attack if we need to do so."
The move comes after months of escalating military pressure by the Trump administration on Maduro over allegations of drug trafficking and narco-terrorism. Maduro and his wife were being transported aboard a U.S. warship to New York on Saturday to face criminal charges.
