The Republican chairman of the House Oversight Committee said Wednesday that “nobody on our side is defending” Attorney General Pam Bondi after a Democratic committee member called for her to be held in contempt over the Jeffrey Epstein files.

The comments from Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., came during a hearing where the committee voted to hold former President Bill Clinton and former first lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in contempt of Congress for defying subpoenas to testify about Epstein, the disgraced financier and convicted sex trafficker who died in 2019.

Rep. Yassamin Ansari, D-Ariz., argued that Bondi should be held in contempt for the U.S. Justice Department’s handling of the government’s files on investigations into Epstein. One month after the Justice Department was legally required to release the files, the department said in a January court filing that it still needs to review millions more files for possible release. In August 2025, the committee subpoenaed Bondi and the Justice Department.

The attorney general “has violated the subpoena issued by this committee,” Ansari told Comer during the hearing. “We should be holding her in contempt to remain fair and to remain transparent.”

Comer responded that Bondi “has complied, she has turned over documents” and criticized Democrats’ previous comments about redactions in the files.“I believe that we will get those documents very soon,” he said. “I have been assured we're going to get those documents very soon.”
