What we know about the Cuba speedboat

Four people have been killed after Cuban soldiers opened fire on a speedboat attempting to infiltrate their country. According to Cuba’s government, 10 passengers, said to be Cubans living in the U.S., entered the country’s territorial waters early Wednesday. The group was on a Florida-registered speed boat roughly one mile northeast of Cayo Falcones, off the north coast of Cuba.

Cuban officials said their officers fired on the vessel after the passengers opened fire. Four passengers were killed and six passengers and one Cuban border officer were injured. Cuba’s government described the incident as an attempt to infiltrate the island and unleash terrorism. PBS News confirmed with a U.S. official that two individuals were U.S. citizens and the boat's owner alleged that the vessel was stolen by an employee.

U.S. officials are trying to gather their own details. The U.S. The Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida said it would seek answers through legal and diplomatic channels and that “the facts remain unclear and conflicting.”
