2:20Now PlayingSen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., raised concern Tuesday that the Trump administration might be heading toward putting troops on the ground in Iran.
"We seem to be on a path toward deploying American troops on the ground in Iran to accomplish any of the potential objectives," he told reporters on Capitol Hill after a confidential briefing Senate Armed Services Committee.
Blumenthal said the briefing had left him "with more questions than answers."
"My questions have been unanswered, and I will demand answers because the American people deserve to know, and I guess I am most concerned about the threat to American lives," he said."
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt responded to the comments later Tuesday, saying Democrats are "disingenuous" and "playing politics" on the issue of Iran.
"I would hesitate to confirm anything that a Democrat on Capitol Hill says right now about the president's thinking," Leavitt said during a White House press briefing.
Yet Leavitt also said that President Donald Trump has not ruled out the option of using ground troops in Iran.
