1:28Now PlayingThe U.S. Senate parliamentarian ruled over the weekend that an effort by Republicans to fast-track a $1 billion request for White House security enhancements, including President Donald Trump’s ballroom project, fails to meet the chamber’s own rules.
Lisa Desjardins reports that Senate Republicans had attempted to include the proposal as part of a budget reconciliation process, which allows the Senate to bypass the 60-vote threshold needed to avoid a filibuster, to advance legislation.
But to use the budget reconciliation process, senators must craft their legislation according to specific rules. Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough said that the proposal does not conform to those rules.
