O’Brien, who graduated in 1985, offered quips on topics ranging from unfashionable caps and gowns to the federal government’s lawsuits against the university.
The Trump administration sued Harvard in March, saying it failed to address antisemitism on campus following Hamas’ attacks on Israel Oct. 7, 2023.
“Many people think I’ve come today to defend Harvard. Well, sorry, those people are wrong,” O’Brien said. “Not only am I not against these lawsuits, I’m here to announce that I’m joining them. I, too, am suing Harvard.”
The crowd laughed and cheered as O’Brien detailed his qualms with the university, including cast-iron bunkbeds, an a cappella group’s performance and a “Cap’n Ben’s fish spaghetti” meal.
“Yes, I’m confident that my claims will have more merit than those filed by the president of the United States,” O’Brien said.
The comedian also referenced the Trump administration’s attempt to bar the university from enrolling international students.
“What has any foreigner ever added to our American culture?” O’Brien asked. “With the possible exception of music, literature, art, cuisine, fashion, architecture, dance, scientific breakthroughs and the core of our moral codes and ethical beliefs.”
