Rep. Lou Correa, D-Calif., asked Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin what he’s doing about American citizens being arrested by immigration enforcement officers in a House Committee on Homeland Security hearing Wednesday.
“What can we do to protect the rights of American citizens?” Correa asked.
“We can protect the rights of American citizens all day long,” Mullin said. “They don't have the right to assault my officers.”
Correa said Americans taking photos of immigration agents in public is a First Amendment right, while Mullin suggested these Americans were impeding an officer’s duty to do their job.
Mullin faced senators on Tuesday in his first congressional hearing since his confirmation to Trump’s Cabinet. The former Oklahoma lawmaker was questioned on his fledgling leadership of the agency, including his threats to remove Customs and Border Protection officers from airports in locations considered "sanctuary cities" by the Trump administration.
Funding for immigration enforcement under Mullin’s department has been lately held up by Republican senators who opposed a Trump administration “anti-weaponization fund.” On Tuesday, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the fund was being abandoned.
