3:18Now PlayingRep. Nellie Pou, D-N.J., told Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin she believed Delaney Hall, an immigration detention center in New Jersey, should be shut down following her oversight visit to the facility.
The immigration detention center has been in the news following protests and a hunger strike from detainees fighting against what they say are inhumane conditions.
“What I witnessed was shocking. Delaney Hall cannot provide the basic need of human beings being held there. It is a stain on New Jersey and on our country,” Pou said. “Detainees are being given moldy bread and lunch meat.”
Pou said the New Jersey Department of Health was initially turned away for an on-site inspection. The department was later allowed to conduct a limited inspection of the kitchen, but not of the medical unit, sleeping areas or bathrooms.
New Jersey’s attorney general has sued Geo Group, the private prison company that operates the detention center.
“Can you commit to granting New Jersey Department of Health full access. Can we get your cooperation to the facility to ensure basic sanitary conditions that are being met?” Pou asked Mullin.
Mullin said DHS allowed the department to enter the facility “and inspect areas that they are contracted and legally able to inspect.”
Mullin also called Delaney Hall a “political topic,” saying New Jersey’s penitentiaries have thousands of complaints against their conditions and Delaney Hall has not received any fines this year.
